Re-finishing Oak

If you have been following for a little while, you have slowly seen the Mr. C's office transform. We have been working on the front waiting room but have not been able to finish it. In the mean time, here is the magazine rack that I have re-finished.

I have mentioned before that oak is everywhere. I wanted to update this magazine rack.

I filled in the wood grain with some stainable wood fill.

Then sanded it down smooth.

I wanted to show the difference, so on the inside of the rack, I didn't fill the in the wood grain. You can still see all those tiger stripes in the oak.

Here is the front where I filled and sanded. Quite a difference in the look of the wood. It still has some variation in the color, but it does not at all look the same.

Here is the finished rack! I was really happy with the way it turned out.

Yes, the wall is a different color. But, I can't do a final reveal of the waiting area because there are a couple major things that are not finished and it just looks, well... unfinished. Even a couple patients have asked if we are moving... Hopefully we can change that soon.

Office Facelift: Part 2

Remember this post? It's been a while since we have been able to do anything to the office. We did paint the front, but nothing else has been done. We are waiting to finish that. But more recently, we face lifted the front hallway.

Here is a picture of the back hallway so you can get an idea of how it looked before.

The wallpaper was probably more of a mauve or rose when it was new. It has since faded to a pink color and these oak cabinets and shelves are everywhere.

We took away the, old faded pictures with think gold frames and oak cabinets (you can see one to the left of the picture). Then we added these metal and glass cabinets. We added a little decor with the more modern plant and the metal art work above the cabinets.

We also removed the wall paper, textured the wall and painted.

In this picture below, you can see the older type of plant that tops all of the cabinets in the office.

It's starting to look fresh and new! We are very happy with the way this hallway turned out. Now we need to finish the front waiting area. After all, that is the very first thing you see when walking in the office. Once we finish that, we will move on to the rest of the halls.

Office Facelift

Since there is so much work going on in our house, why not do a project ourselves?

Dr. C's office is pretty dated. It's been these colors for quite a few years. It has had things done to it over the years like carpet, or reupholstered chairs and tables, but those have all stuck with the same color scheme. Dr. C is ready to make this place more current. Here are some pictures of different rooms in the office...

Lots of oak. It's a good solid workable wood, but dated.

And wall paper everywhere! Remember back in the day, going to a wall paper store and seeing rolls and rolls of wallpaper in shelves that lined the isles? There was so much to choose from.

When Dr. C and I took down the wall paper, it came off in sheets and I rolled them up just like when they were bought. It took me back to those days shopping for wall paper for my room when I was a kid.

We updated the massage room and Dr. C's office space as a start. Here are some pictures of what we have done:

It looks like someone stacked extra candles on the shelves, that looks funny. We will have to take care of that. But over the room is dimly lit an filled with soft colors. Its a place to relax, so we wanted it to have a relaxing feel. It's hard to get good pictures in the dim light with my phone which is all I had on me this day.

Now for our latest update. It only took us 2 days to remove the wall paper, paint and put all the furniture back. We also changed out a few decorative items and Craig would like to update the oak with a more modern stain.

Dr. C didn't want just simple solid walls, he wanted to give them some interest. Stripes are easy and add a lot of visual interest, but lots of stripes was too much for a small office. It also seemed more like a kids room. Maybe that's because our son has stripes on his wall.

The one stripe was enough, so he wanted to add a color that went well with his new decorations.

I love the way it turned out. Totally his style and it looks very professional. Opposite his desk is where the patients sit.
