Rag Rug

Well, it's a work in progress, but I finally got my rag rug started. Here is my long braid. I love all the different colors.

Usually I will knit on a long drive and last week we went to the Grand Canyon. Since I have been dying to get one of these made, I decided to do this instead of knitting on our drive.

Unfortunately, I ran out of fabric so I couldn't finish with 4 hours left in the drive home. But, when I am done, it will go great in my 70's kitchen. I feel like if you can't change it, just go with it.

It will be a while before it's done, I need scraps to make it. I feel like it's a waist to buy beautiful fabric and cut it into scraps, I have make something with it first.

I really like the way the browns turned out in it.

  1. I tried to make something like this out of some old clothes I have around the house and I made it into a pot holder. I made two so far. LOL! :)

  3. This is so sweet...what width strips did you use? Did you hand-sew it together? May have to try this with all my scraps of fabric!

  4. So forgive me, I'm clueless on this. How do you actually make it. What size stips do you use? I get that you braid together stips and then what do you do? Do you sew by hand to join the pieces together?

I'd love to know more. You can stop at my blog and leave a comment with details or please email me at cafescrapper at gmail dot com

    Thanks, Susie

  5. What a timeless tradition. Did you braid them naturally? I've seen a sort of tool thing that curls them up as you go I think it was. What a perfect way to take scraps and put them to good use. I'm so glad I found this wonderful reminder of a bit of Americana!

I came here from the "Homemaker on a Dime" site because this is such a great idea for our Linky Party too this week. The theme is 'Creative Final Resting Place Ideas' this time.

Would you like to add your post to our site? We're somewhat new yet getting good traffic already and ranking very well for the search engines.

We'd love to host your 'link' there this week too!

  6. Hi, I just wanted to do a little response to everyone. I am working on a tutorial for this rag rug. But to answer a few quick questions, my strips are about 1.5-2 inches. I do braid them by hand, I just leave one piece short so I can pull it through and it doesn't braid at the end also.

I hope you'll come back for the tutorial and make your own.
